DIY – A Beautiful ‘Earth’ Shirt

IMG_7176My oldest daughter’s fourth grade class put on a play called “Geology Rocks.” It is a sweet and funny play with tons of facts about the geology of our beautiful big blue planet. Sky was well cast as the Earth! She even got to sing a short solo describing the many phenomena below the Earth’s surface.

I got to be her costume designer! I went to my favorite second hand store, Aubergine Vintage Emporium, because it is inexpensive and they have a huge selection of used clothing.

I found a lovely layered wrap skirt in blue tones, with red and violet accents. Then I found a white baby doll style blouse that I decided to dye to match the skirt. I used Jacquard fabric dye and paints.

The first step is to soak the garment in soda ash.

Then I tied rubber bands in a diagonal line from hip to shoulder, hoping to create the effect of a chain of islands in the deep blue ocean. In hindsight, I would have gathered more fabric, as the circles turned out good, but kind of small.

I applied the dye. The color I purchased was sapphire with emerald tones. It turned out to be perfect!

I had to let it soak in a plastic bag for 12-24 hours. Then I rinsed it and dried it in the drier.

I am very happy with the end result.

Here is Skylar performing her song, “I am Deep.”
